The Best Online Cybersecurity Courses of 2025

Why take a cybersecurity course or training?

As a cybersecurity professional who frequently writes about the newest data trends and cyber developments, it’s important for me to stay on top of the latest trainings.

However, not all courses are created equal. Some courses are costly, while others are free. Some come with certifications and others are more for general knowledge.

The type of course you should take really depends on your specific knowledge needs. For example, you may need a cybersecurity course for training your workforce and reaching compliance mandates. Or you may want to take a course to get into the cybersecurity field. Even still, some take courses to be better at their cybersecurity job and to make sure their fellow employees stay on top of attack trends.

Read this blog to discover which cybersecurity training course you should take in 2025 to level up your cybersecurity know-how.

Free Cybersecurity Courses

It’s hard to argue with free. If you’re a small business owner who needs to train both yourself and your staff, I’d start with free courses that give you a foundational understanding of cyber hygiene.

Here’s a list of my favorite courses that are completely free to take.

  1. Best Course For Training Workforce for Free: SecurityMetrics Academy

The SecurityMetrics Academy offers several different courses depending on what you need to brush up on. These courses include:

  • Data Security 101
  • Policies and Procedures
  • How to Properly Manage Sensitive Data
  • Security Tools
  • How to Respond to a Data Breach
  • Compliance Mandates

I like that SecurityMetrics Academy offers videos for each step of the course as well as written information. If you find a topic you want to know more about, the course links additional resources below.

A great feature of the course are the check in quizzes, so you can test your cybersecurity knowledge or your employees.

If you need your workforce to be trained, but you don’t have the budget for expensive courses, SecurityMetrics Academy is a great place to start.

  1. Best Course For Government Employees: CISA Learning Course

If you’re a government worker or just a member of the general public that wants to understand cloud security, ethical hacking and surveillance, risk management, malware analysis, and more, CISA Learning Course is a great free resource.

Here are some of the things that CISA offers:

  • Content from FedVTE for users of all proficiency levels from beginner to advanced
  • 850 hours of training mapped to the NICE Framework
  • Certification prep courses on topics such as Ethical Hacking, Certified Information Security Manager (CISM), and Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)

I like that CISA offers the ability to work at your own pace from a computer or mobile device, so you can complete the training in the way that works for you. This training is comprehensive and works best for those who already have a foundational knowledge of cybersecurity terms.

This course doesn’t have the gamified lessons, videos, or images that other ones on this list have, however. But if you are heading into the field of cybersecurity, especially as a government employee, I would highly recommend the CISA Learning course.

  1. Best Gamified Free Course: TryHackMe

TryHackMe is a beloved free cybersecurity course for those who are interested in better protecting sensitive information, or for those looking to become certified in different cybersecurity or compliance standards.

I think that TryHackMe is excellent for those who want to learn about cybersecurity but don’t have the attention span for purely textual courses. That isn’t to say that TryHackMe isn’t super comprehensive and in-depth, because it is. If you have no background in cybersecurity, you will come out of this course with at least a moderate level of knowledge.

I like that TryHackMe gamifies their learning and makes it fun to become more knowledgeable. I also appreciate that there is an associated difficulty level for each course, so you know how hard it will be to finish.

Paid Cybersecurity Courses and Certifications

Sometimes, free courses simply don’t offer what you or your team needs to be successful. Level up your cybersecurity knowledge with these paid courses.

  1. Most Comprehensive Paid Course Subscription: PluralSight

Pluralsight offers thousands of cybersecurity and tech courses for one monthly subscription fee. If you’re seriously considering a career in cybersecurity, Pluralsight is my top recommended subscription-based platform.

Cost: If you’re in charge of an IT department and want your employees to always stay on top of trends, you should also consider a business subscription to Pluralsight.

I like that the individual rates aren’t too expensive. You can start using the platform for only $21 a month. I also appreciate that Pluralsight course authors are vetted, with 90% of authors having at least ten years of cybersecurity/tech experience.

  1. Best Paid Course for Prospective PenTesters: Complete Ethical Hacking Bootcamp

It’s hard to argue with the thousands of reviews saying that this bootcamp is perfect for those interested in becoming penetration testers. Penetration testing is essential ethical hacking, wherein pen testers try to breach a business network to show where holes in security exist. The penetration bootcamp is perfect for those who are trying to get started in the field but aren’t ready for official certification tests.

Cost: This bootcamp is on Udemy which has lots of courses for purchase. At the time of writing this blog, the bootcamp was on sale for $13.99.

  1. Best Paid Courses for Training Your Workforce to Meet Compliance Requirements: SecurityMetrics Workforce Trainings

Depending on the type of compliance standard you are required to follow for your industry, SecurityMetrics offers workforce training to meet training requirements. Whether you are required to meet PCI compliance, HIPAA, GDPR, CCPA, or simply want data security training, there is a paid course for your workforce available.

I like that SecurityMetrics workforce trainings are simple to navigate and allow customization if you require more than one training for employees. The best feature of SecurityMetrics workforce trainings is the ability for managers and executives to clearly see which employees have completed trainings and how they did. This makes reaching and documenting PCI DSS compliance requirement 12.6 easier.

Cost: SecurityMetrics Workforce Trainings are typically $70 a person, but pricing is primarily based on how many employees you purchase trainings for.
